Arrive Early and Plan Your Route
You know what they say about the early worm? There are a lot of early worms at garage sales. You’ll see them waiting by the curb until they have the go-ahead to shop. It seems extreme, but it’s how you land the best finds. That said, at the end of the day, sellers will most likely be very open to letting their items go for much less. You won’t have as much to choose from, but you never know — you might find what you need.
Look for Signs of Quality
Check carefully for well-made items, sturdy construction, and high-quality materials. These items are likely to last longer and provide better value for your money. Check seams. See what kind of wood furniture is made from and how the pieces are joined together.
Don’t Be Afraid to Dig
Don’t be afraid to dig through boxes and piles of items. Hidden treasures can often be found buried beneath the surface. Take your time and be thorough in your search. You might want to wear gloves to protect your hands.
Check for Brand Names and Labels
Check for brand names and labels on items, especially if you’re planning to resell items. Brand name items can almost always be resold for a higher price. Look for popular brands in clothing, electronics, and household items.

Bring a magnifying glass to examine items closely. This can help you identify small details and markings that may affect an item’s value. This is especially the case with antique or vintage items. Bring cash, in small denominations, in case the seller doesn’t have enough change. Bring water and sunscreen.

An effective negotiation technique is to ask to bundle items, rather than to ask get prices lowered on one item. It’s a win-win if you want both items.

Know the prices and values of items before you go shopping. This will help you identify good deals and avoid overpaying for items. While you’re at the sale you can be checking prices on eBay. Also, know what your limit is for spending on any particular item.

Look for multi-family sales, which will have a wider variety of items for sale. It’s more efficient for you to shop at one big multi-family or community sale than to drive to several smaller sales.

Be open-minded and creative when searching for hidden gems. Look for items that can be repurposed or up-cycled.
